The Chicagoan rises from its Jazz Age grave and will feature a literature section edited by The Book Slut. We posted a bunch of the magazine’s covers fromt he 1920s. Check it out.
(Thanks Maud Newton for the tip.)

Longman & Eagle is the perfect place to stay if you’re planning spending the evening on getting a bit liquored up, as you can wake up to their breakfast menu that is seriously a work of art that cures all that ails you. I’d been hoping to try out their supposedly life changing sunny side duck hash, but since there was a delivery screw up, I had to wait another day to try it out. (I did try it, and it was pretty fantastic.)
A bit disappointed, I ordered the fried chicken, waffles, sweet potato & pork belly hash, maple syrup, since I’m a sucker for each of those things on their own. The result was beyond outstanding: the chicken was plump, the sweet potatoes tasted clean and fresh, and all the meat tasted delicious with the syrup drizzled over it. It was the greatest plate of chicken and waffles I’ve ever had; and yes, I’ve had more than a few plates in my life.

This was actually all that I remember from my first evening at Longman & Eagle in Chicago. I ended up testing out a few whiskey flights, drinking at least one of their cocktails that included bourbon and Boylan’s root beer, and a couple of their Longman Manhattans.

Going to Chicago this week. This is my agenda:
- Try and spend as much time at my hotel, Longman & Eagle, as possible, but without spending too much time at my hotel…
- Try Maude’s Liquor Bar.
- Visit my hometown of Skokie, and go to the mall where there’s a L.L. Bean store, because that’s the only thing we don’t have in New York.
- Check out Apartment Number 9.
- Eat at least two hot dogs.
- Eat at Hot Doug’s at least once.
- Stroll around the campus of the University of Chicago.
- A bloody mary at the Ginger Man in Wrigleyville.
